What October Means for Disability Inclusion and Why Your Organization Should Be Paying Attention

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. And every year, I watch organizations do one of two things with it.
Some post a graphic, share a statistic they found online, and move on. The moment passes. The attention fades. And the employees inside their organizations who are blind or have low vision take quiet note of the distance between what was posted and what they actually experience every day.
Others use October as a genuine inflection point. A moment to look honestly, to act deliberately, and to build something that is still standing and still serving people when February comes around.
I want to help more organizations be the second kind. And I want to help them get started before the month begins.
What NDEAM Actually Represents
National Disability Employment Awareness Month has been observed in the United States since 1945. It exists to educate employers and the public about disability employment issues and to celebrate the real, measurable contributions of workers with disabilities across every industry in this country.
The theme changes each year. The need does not. Unemployment among people with disabilities consistently runs significantly higher than among people without disabilities. The barriers are real. The solutions exist. What is most often missing is not awareness but organizational will.
What Real Action Looks Like
Real action in October does not look like a single thoughtful post or a well-attended lunchtime panel. It looks like an honest internal assessment of whether the employees who are blind or have low vision in your organization right now have everything they actually need to perform at their full capability.
It looks like a genuine review of your accommodation processes to ask not whether they satisfy compliance requirements but whether they are actually working for the people they are supposed to serve.
It looks like a conversation with someone like me who can help you see clearly what is working, what is missing, and what can be built before the month is over.
An Invitation
I have dedicated availability in October for Workplace Accommodation Assessments and employer training sessions. If your organization wants to use this month as a real beginning rather than a well-intentioned gesture, I would love to work with you.
Let us make October something that your employees who are blind or have low vision are still talking about when spring arrives. Because that is the kind of October worth having.
Remember to be grateful, and just as important, remember to be kind, because kindness is contagious. Stay blessed and empowered.
