Today, October 15th, as we recognize White Cane Safety Day, I find myself reflecting on my journey as someone who has been legally blind for over 50 years. The white cane has been a constant companion for me, not just as a tool, but as a symbol of independence, empowerment, and resilience.

For many, the white cane might simply look like an aid to help people who are visually impaired get around. But for those of us who rely on it, it represents so much more. It’s a lifeline, enabling us to navigate the world with confidence, despite the barriers we face. It allows us to interact with our surroundings freely, whether it’s crossing a street, attending a meeting, simply going for a walk, or for us adventurous ones-hiking the Grand Canyon!

As I celebrate White Cane Safety Day, I want to highlight the importance of fostering a world where accessibility and inclusion are the norms, not exceptions. The white cane reminds me daily that independence is possible, but it also reminds me of the work that remains to ensure that everyone, regardless of ability, has the same opportunities to succeed.

My Story

For those of you who don’t know me yet, I’ve been employed, educating and advocating for the blind and visually impaired community for over three decades. Through programs, educational initiatives, and now my podcast, I’ve dedicated myself to ensuring that people with vision impairments, as well as their families, teachers, and employers, have access to the resources and support they need.

I’m also a caregiver to my husband, who is on hospice, and my experiences in this role have taught me even more about the importance of resilience, advocacy, and the need for a compassionate community.

What White Cane Safety Day Means to Me

White Cane Safety Day isn't just about celebrating the cane itself—it's about recognizing the strides we’ve made in accessibility, while also acknowledging how much further we have to go. It’s a day to reflect on how far we’ve come as a society in breaking down barriers for the blind and visually impaired and how much work is still needed to ensure that everyone has the tools they need to thrive.

As I continue my journey, I’ll be sharing more about my experiences, tips on assistive technology, caregiving, and the broader topic of accessibility in our communities. I believe that when we work together, we can create a world that is more inclusive and supportive for all.

I hope you’ll join me on this journey. Let’s break down barriers together and create a world where independence is within everyone’s reach.
